Dr. Bliss is a Past President of the Arizona Nurses Association and is serving the last year of her term, as well as a Representatvie for Legislative District 1. The Arizona Nurses Association has opened her eyes to the importance of advancing the nursing profession and promoting a healthy Arizona through public policy. Dr. Bliss has seen first-hand the power and influence nurses have as it relates to healthcare policy. She comes from a family of public servants and will continue to look for opportunities to serve and give back to the nursing profession. During this presentation,
Carrie recently completed her PhD in nursing with the University of Arizona. She is a 2017 Robert Wood Johnson Future of Nursing Scholar. Her research focus is transitions to the rural community after incarceration for adults with mental illness. She is currently pursuing her DNP, with UA, in the psychiatric mental health specialty. She plans to continue research efforts focused on policy reform and mental health.
Carrie has worked in public health, managed care, quality, clinical, and leadership roles. She is currently the president of the Southeastern Arizona Health Education Consortium. She is an adjunct instructor for the School of Sociology at the University of Arizona.
Earning her associate of nursing from Davis & Elkins College in 2005, and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Fayetteville State in 2006, she commissioned and served eight years in the United States Army Nurse Corps. She continued her education earning her master's in public health in 2011 and her Master of Science in nursing in 2015. Carrie holds a post-graduate certificate in nursing education.
Dr. Godfrey is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Nursing (CON), is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, and holds certification in public health. At Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, her DNP degree studies encompassed a leadership focus with public health training at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, specializing in American Indian Healthcare. She also practices as an advanced practice nurse in emergency healthcare for tribal nations with TribalEM.
Dr. Godfrey is a proud member of the Navajo Nation and is a strong advocate for increasing the presence of individuals from groups underrepresented (UR) in health profession fields. Her primary focus is creating equitable academic opportunities for students from historically marginalized populations. She is the current program director for the HRSA Arizona Nursing Inclusive Excellence scholars project and lead on an Indian Health Services award (American Indians in Nursing Career Advancement Transition Scholars) aiming to increase the number of Native American nurses practicing in tribal communities. She also co-leads the UA CON Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Task Force. Additionally, she serves on the interprofessional UA Health Sciences EDI task force, the inaugural Western Institute of Nursing Diversity and Inclusion task force, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Group to promote diversity, equity and belonging in nursing research and education in the United States. Lastly, she is engaged in legislative efforts to establish a tribal-specific Arizona Health Education Center to develop health sciences education opportunities with tribal communities in Arizona.
